Google shuts down Translate app for China

Google has pulled the plug on its Translate app for China, citing low usage.

In 2010, Alphabet Inc.’s Google pulled its search engine from mainland China as the government’s censorship of internet content bit hard.

Google has explored ways to retain a foothold in China’s booming internet market, making its translation service available to users in the country in 2017 via a dedicated website and smartphone app.

US-China tensions have worsened and both countries move to protect sensitive technologies and intellectual property.
