Google leads $300 million funding round in India’s ShareChat

Mohalla Tech, the parent company of India’s ShareChat has raised nearly $300 million in a new funding round.

The funding round was led by Google, Times Group and Singapore’s Temasek Holdings.

Sharechat, upon the funding round, is now valued at nearly $5 billion.

Google had previously backed Josh, which competes with ShareChat’s sister firm Moj. ShareChat’s new funding marks Google’s second investment in India’s short video space.

ShareChat was last valued at $3.7 billion in a $266 million funding round from investors including Alkeon Capital and Temasek.

Twitter and Snap are amongst ShareChat’s investors. As a result, should the bid by Tesla CEO Elon Musk to buy Twitter go through, Musk will have potentially a stake of between 6% and 8% in ShareChat.
