Microsoft poaches a major Apple engineer

Microsoft Corp has hired a key Apple Inc engineer to design its own chips for its servers, Reuters reports.

Microsoft snatched industry veteran Mike Filippo from Apple. Filippo had worked for Apple for over two years.

Microsoft is looking to, at least, cut down its heavy reliance on Intel and Advanced Micro Devices Inc to supply chips for its Azure cloud computing services as well as Surface PCs.

Microsoft is also working on in-house processors for the servers running its cloud-computing services and Surface line of personal computers.

Filippo could help Microsoft accelerate the creation of homegrown chips for its servers powering Azure cloud computing services.

Filippo started his career as a CPU designer at chip designer AMD in 1996.

He has previously worked at Intel and UK ARM Ltd before joining Apple.
