Facebook exposes spy firms that targeted 50,000 people

Reuters reports that Facebook owner Meta Platforms Inc is exposing half a dozen private surveillance companies for hacking.

Meta is accusing the firms of in a report targeting about 50,000 people across its platforms.

Notably, U.S. lawmakers and President Joe Biden’s administration, in their crackdown on digital espionage services, have blacklisted Israeli spyware company, NSO Group.

Meta is already suing NSO in a U.S. court, Reuters reported.

Meta is suspending roughly 1,500, mostly fake accounts run by seven organizations across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

Amongst the spyware firms Meta exposed are Israel’s Black Cube, India’s BellTroX, Israel’s Bluehawk CI, and a European firm named Cytrox.

Meta also accused Cognyte, and Israeli firms Cobwebs Technologies of using fake profiles to trick people into revealing private data.
