For businesses across the globe, one of the first decisions made by entrepreneurs is what type and make of computer to use company-wide.
The primary choice is between Windows PCs and Apple Macs, with the former currently boasting the largest market share of the two with 70%. However, Apple Macs are incrementally closing the gap year-on-year, claiming a 30% market share according to the most recent figures.
But which device type is better, and what are the key factors on which you should base your decision?
#1. Cost
Let’s start with the elephant in the room; as there’s no getting away from the fact that Macs are noticeably more expensive than Windows PCs.
More specifically, the retail price of a MacBook Pro starts at around £1,000, while a standard PC or laptop powered by Windows can cost as little as £500.
For small businesses, budget is a major consideration when choosing different types of equipment and hardware, so purchasing Macs may not be a viable option unless you’re operating a particularly small team of employees.
PCs also offer buyers more flexibility and choice with regards to pricing, with a far wider range of models for sale on the market (as is the case with the smartphone market).
#2. Security
When it comes to reported breaches and malware, Macs undoubtedly win out over Windows if you look back through recent history.
Of course, Macs aren’t immune to cyber attacks, but they’re far less vulnerable than Windows PCs if the data is anything to go by.
The reason for this is that less malware programs have been designed for Macs, which are less popular globally and used by a smaller number of people overall.

If your business or employees work regularly with apps, you may also find it difficult to get a bespoke app approved in the App Store, which can be frustrating for small businesses that rely on software development.
Conversely, PCs have a much larger software library and therefore provide far greater compatibility across the board.
