University lecturer, wife and 3 kids dies in motor accident in Benue

A lecturer of the University of Mkar, Moses Tarnongo, his wife and three kids were killed in a ghastly motor accident in Benue State.

Two other persons including another lecturer of the above mentioned university, Joshua Leva also lost their lives in the accident.

The accident occurred on Saturday evening, 10th of October at Gbatse community along Ugbema-Adikpo road in Ushongo local government area, Benue State.

According to the Registrar of the University of Mkar, Rev. Emmanuel Astor, who confirmed the incident on Sunday in Makurdi, Moses Tarnong died alongside his wife and three kids.

Astor said that both lecturers were from the department of Mass Communication, adding that the victims were on transit to Adikpo, Kwande Local Government Area of the state to see a cleric when the incident occurred.

An eyewitness said that a trailer truck rammed into a stationary Toyota car with registration number MKD-300-NH, crushing the seven occupants of the vehicle to death.

It was alleged by the eyewitness that the driver of the truck bought a fairly used car and kept it aboard and was trying to dodge a police check point when he rammed into the Toyota car.

According to reports, it took hours to bring out the corpse from the crushed Toyota car.

The incident was confirmed by the FRSC Public Enlightenment Officer in the state, DRC Joyce Akura. Akura said that the incident occurred along Ugbemea-Adikpo road.

According to Akura, the accident involved a trailer truck with registration number WKR 496 XA and a Toyota car with registration number MKD 300 NH.

Akura added that 12 passengers were involved in the incident. He said that seven passengers were confirmed dead, one was injured and are receiving treatment, while the other four escaped uninjured.

The FRSC official noted that the cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained, adding that a “crash investigation’’ to determine the cause of the incident will be conducted.

Akura said that the corpse of the deceased had already been deposited at a mortuary in Ushongo.

Meanwhile, the Governor of the state, Samuel Ortom has sent his heartfelt condolences to the relatives of the victims, as well as the management, staff and students of University.
