Late last month, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) launched its long-awaited game streaming service but only for Android devices because Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS didn’t support the format. Xbox chief Phil Spencer said the company remained committed to getting the service onto Apple devices.
The Verge sources now say Microsoft is working on a “direct browser-based solution” that could bring the xCloud streaming service to iOS in early 2021.
Microsoft is still working on an xCloud iOS app it hopes will eventually run on the operating system.
The streaming service is part of Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, which is how Microsoft hopes to differentiate its upcoming console from rival Sony. Microsoft’s recent $7.5B acquisition of major game publisher Bethesda also helps.
Yesterday, Microsoft released new app guidelines that took subtle swipes at Apple’s App Store policies, including not allowing content streamed from the web.
