Two persons have been reported dead after a three storey building collapsed along Azikiwe road in Aba, Abia State, while five others are trapped in the rubble.
Another victim was rescued alive and is currently receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital in the city.
It was reported that the deceased persons and survivor of the collapsed building, were homeless people in Aba who usually take shelter in incomplete buildings and similar structures.
Vanguard who visited the area, disclosed that there was no excavator equipment to help rescue efforts, as at the time they got there.
However, residents managed to go in through some open parts of the collapsed building to rescue the survivor.
It was also gathered that hooflums attacker those taking pictures with their phone and this made some sympathizers to leave the scene.
According to a shop owner in the area, the incident happened in the early hours of Wednesday 16th September, as the building was still under construction as at the time he closed for business on Tuesday.
He said; “The building was still standing when I closed for business Tuesday. Construction work was ongoing, but when I came on Wednesday, the building had collapsed. Two persons have been confirmed dead, one rescued and taken to hospital while five persons are trapped in the building.”
It was further learnt that there could be more people trapped in the building as many homeless people usually find their way into the building to pass the night.
However, it was alleged by residents that the cause of the collapse was due to the use of inferior materials by the contractor.
