(NHK) – China says it supports the Chinese operator of the video-sharing app TikTok in planning its legal challenge to the US government.
US President Donald Trump has demanded that the operator, ByteDance, divest TikTok’s US operations, citing the possibility that Beijing could abuse personal data of the app’s users.
ByteDance responded to the demand, saying the firm will file a lawsuit against the Trump administration.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian told reporters on Monday that China supports relevant companies in taking up legal weapons to safeguard their rights and interests.
Zhao said some US politicians harbor fears toward the rise and success of non-US companies, so they never hesitate to wield state power to suppress them.
He went on to say that the latest US move is a denial of the market economy and fair competition principles that the United States has touted all the way through.
