Man sentenced to death by hanging for killing farmer

A 26-year-old man with the name Dele Ojo has been sentenced to death by hanging by an Ekiti state high court for killing a farmer, Ajayi Adewole.

The suspect was accused of committing the said offence on the 13th of September, 2018, at Iroko Ekiti in Ijero LGA of Ekiti State, contrary to Section 319 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap.C16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

It was gathered that Ojo had been stealing yams from the deceased’s farm before he was caught red-handed in the act. Adewole reportedly called out Ojo’s name and to evade being caught, Ojo shot him at close range and ran away.

Though Adewole was rushed to the Ijero Ekiti Specialist hospital, he was later pronounced dead.
Handing down the verdict on Monday 17th August, Justice Abiodun Adesodun said;

“The circumstances of this case don’t allow for recommendation of clemency to the governor on behalf of the accused.

“Therefore, the defendant is hereby sentenced to death by hanging. May the Lord have mercy on his soul.”
