Pentagon to setup a UFO task force

(NHK WORLD) – The US Defense Department says it will set up a task force to investigate unidentified flying objects, or UFOs, in response to a number of reported sightings.

The move comes amid growing concerns over potentially dangerous encounters.

In April, the Pentagon released three videos captured by naval aircraft in 2004 and 2015 that purportedly show UFOs.

The new task force will be tasked with analyzing what it calls “unidentified aerial phenomena” that could pose a threat to US national security. The US Navy will lead the team.

In a statement released on Friday, the Defense Department said the safety of its personnel and the security of its operations are of paramount concern.

US media say some Pentagon officials believe the sightings may be of drones operated by hostile forces with the aim of gathering intelligence.
