Tornado warning issued for New York City

A tornado watch has been issued for the city and the Tri-state area Tuesday as Tropical Storm Isaias churns up the eastern seaboard, state officials said.

The tornado watch, which stretches from Atlantic City to Norwich, CT, is in effect until 4 p.m. The National Weather Service says the approaching tropical storm will be bringing “conditions favorable for a tornado to form.”

“Tornadoes can cause flying debris, turn unsecured objects into projectiles and cause power outages,” the warning notes.

As of 8 a.m. Tropical Storm Isaias was moving across southeastern Virginia as it heads north, bringing heavy downpours and 70 mph winds.

It was moving northeast at an estimated speed of 28 mph hour and is expected to gain momentum and quicken its forward motion as the day progresses, officials said.

Storm advisories were issued Monday up the Eastern Seaboard through Maine, where intense rain is expected before the storm rushes into Canada at some point this evening.
