City Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot has resigned, a Health Department spokesperson confirmed to the Daily News on Tuesday.
The news comes after months of tensions between the Health Department and Mayor de Blasio during the COVID-19 outbreak.
According to New York Daily, Dr. Dave Chokshi will succeed Barbot as commissioner, the mayor said in a press release. Chokshi comes from NYC Health + Hospitals, where he was most recently chief population officer.
“Together, we will emerge from this pandemic as a stronger, fairer, and healthier city,” Chokshi said in a statement.
The new choice for commissioner “has helped lead our city’s public health system under unprecedented challenges,” Hizzoner stated. “I know he’s ready to lead the charge forward in our fight for a fairer and healthier city for all.”
