Lagos State Governor rescues man from #500,000 debt after he attempted suicide

A father of two identified as Adeyinka Abiodun, has been rescued by the police from committing suicide over a debt of N500,000.

Abiodun who resides in the Ikotun area of Lagos State had embarked on a mission, to take his own life by jumping into the lagoon on Friday 31st July.

However, he was promptly intercepted by police operatives deployed in the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday 2nd July,

According to Elkana, the suicide attempt was thwarted by police operatives at about 1:50pm on Friday 31st July, while the victim was rescued and taken to the Bariga Police Station for questioning and debriefing.

Narrating his ordeal, Abiodun narrated that he procured a loan of N390,000 in March with monthly repayment plan for six months and accrued interest of N142,287:25 from a microfinance bank in Lagos Island.

It was reported that Abiodun collected the loan with the intention of using the money to upgrade his wine retail business, but the business failed and the money was lost.

The microfinance bank however confirmed to the Police that the man collected the loan.

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was moved with compassion and came to Abiodun’s rescue by repaying the loan.

Elkana also stated that Abiodun holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Physics and a Master’s degree in Business Administration.

Abiodun is currently attending medical and counselling sessions.
