Two of three officers of the Nigerian Police who sexually harassed a 25-year-old lady as shown in a viral video on Wednesday, July 22, the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) said officers involved have been identified and arrested.
The police made this known in a statement released by its spokesperson Frank Mba on Friday, July 24, describing the act as “discreditable and unprofessional”
Mba said three police officers and one civilian accomplice who engaged in the inhumane treatment of the victim have been identified.
The statement confirming the arrest reads in part:
“Following investigations into the dehumanizing treatment of a female citizen as shown in a viral video on Wednesday, 22nd July, 2020, the Nigeria Police Force have identified three (3) police officers and one (1) civilian accomplice who participated in the unprofessional act.
Two (2) suspects, ASP Tijani Olatunji and Inspr Gboyega Oyeniyi have been arrested for their role in the discreditable conduct and incivility to a member of the public. They are currently being detained at the Lagos State CID detention facility, Panti, Yaba.
Preliminary investigations show that the policemen who are attached Area ‘A’ Command, Lion Building, Lagos, were on legitimate investigation activities to Ibadan, Oyo State where the incident took place.
Effort is being intensified to arrest the two other accomplices. Meanwhile, appropriate disciplinary procedure will be initiated as soon as investigations are concluded.”
On Wednesday, the Inspector-General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, ordered an investigation into a video making rounds on social media, showing some police officers harassing a female suspect.
The officers had gone to the home of a suspected kidnapper and armed robber in Ibadan, Oyo state, to arrest him and there they met the 25-year-old lady named Towobola.
After the policemen took the kidnap suspect away, they faced Towobola, handcuffed her and accused her of sleeping with the suspected criminal.
One of the police officers who gave his name as ‘Wyclef’, started filming Tobowola with his phone, asking her questions about her sex life.
Wyclef in the video made mockery of Towobola, telling her that young ladies are fond of dating men with questionable wealth and often land themselves into trouble doing so.
He said that if he were to woo Towobola, she wouldn’t have accepted him but would rather have sex with criminals.
He went further to ask her if she was a virgin and how many men she has slept with.
Towobola stated that she is 25 years old, and a graduate of the University of Ibadan, adding that she had just completed her NYSC.
Reacting to the video, the Inspector-General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, condemned the actions of the police officers, stating that they would be brought to justice.
”The Inspector General of Police has ordered discreet investigations into the circumstances surrounding the dehumanizing treatment meted out to a female citizen in the above viral video.
The IGP, while condemning the act, has directed the commencement of comprehensive investigations aimed at unraveling the true identity of the perpetrators with a view to bringing them to justice.
Members of the public are hereby assured that any member of the Force found culpable in the incident will be made to face appropriate sanctions.” Adamu stated.
