(Chicago-U.S.) – Suspected gunman is now in custody after he allegedly opened fire at a funeral in Chicago with up to 16 people shot and eyewitnesses reporting seeing “bodies lying everywhere”.
According residents reported hearing gunshots before seeing victims in the street at in the 1000 block of W. 79th St. outside of a funeral home.
Chicago Police has confirmed multiple people were shot during the ongoing incident in the city’s Auburn Gresham community on Tuesday evening, local time.
Chicago Fire Department said 11 victims had been taken to hospital and were in a critical condition.
Sources have described a planned ambush outside where a memorial service for a murder victim was taking place, reports CBS Chicago.
The shooting is understood to have started at around 6.30pm.
“All we saw was just bodies laying everywhere,” Arnita Gerder local reporters.
“Shot up everywhere, all over. Legs, stomach, back, all over the place. We thought it was a war out here.”
Over the July 4th weekend, 87 people were wounded by gunfire in Chicago and 17 were killed, including two children.
President Donald Trump has promised to send in 150 federal agents to tackle violence in Chicago.
However, Mayor Lori Lightfoot said she would “under no circumstances” allow to happen.
