One person is confirmed dead, three injured in Manhattan scaffolding collapse

At least one person has been confirmed dead and three others injured in a Midtown scaffolding collapse on Thursday.

According to the New York Post, the unfortunate incident happened few blocks away from the scene of a partial building collapse earlier in the day, authorities said.

Just how the 4:30 p.m. scaffold collapse unfolded wasn’t immediately clear, but photographs of the aftermath on East 36th Street near Lexington Avenue show the sidewalk shed sinking under the weight of debris.

Above, a movable platform — similar to that used for window-washing — dangles perpendicular to the ground, the cables on one side apparently having given way.

One person was killed, and three others injured, officials said.

Of the survivors, two suffered serious injuries, while the third’s wounds were not life-threatening.

The incident occurred just blocks away from — and hours after — a vacant building partially collapsed into a neighboring construction site.

The northwest corner of four-story 211 E. 34th St. came crashing down around 10:50 a.m., the FDNY said. No injuries were reported, but surrounding buildings were evacuated and utilities shut off.

The medium reported that the city Department of Buildings is investigating both incidents. Officials are probing whether an excavation project underway in a lot next door to the East 34th Street building played a roll in the collapse, officials said.
