Prime Minister of France, Edouard Philippe and government resign

The Prime Minister of France, Edouard Philippe and member of his entire cabinet have resigned.

There were no reason given for their resignation.

However, he has been replaced with Jean Castex, a relatively low-profile figure who coordinated France’s reopening strategy and is known as “Monsieur Déconfinement”.

The Élysée Palace announced on Friday morning that Philippe, an increasingly popular figure during the crisis, had submitted the government’s resignation but would remain as head of an interim government until the president, Emmanuel Macron, carried out a reshuffle and named his successor.

In French government reshuffles, the prime minister tenders their resignation before new cabinet appointments.
