I’m not on the same level with Mikel – Onazi

Denizlispor of Turkey central Midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi says he would be grateful to get close to what fellow compatriot John Obi Mikel has achieved.

Speaking with Germany-based Nigerian Journalist, Oma Akatugba on Instagram Live, the former Super Eagles Vice-captain once again discarded the rumours of a rift between him and his then captain.

Onazi stated categorically that he is inspired by Mikel’s achievement and would count himself lucky to match his football career height if possible.

“If I attain a certain height Mikel has reached, I will be appreciative,” Onazi said.

The Nigerian media had suggested that the duo had a misunderstanding and were not in talking terms ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Mikel Obi later reunited with his Onazi at Turkish club Trabzonspor last year when he signed a two-year contract, although he did not see it out due to his stance about the Turkish Super Lig continuing amid the global coronavirus pandemic.

“Mikel was coming to play in my position but I was so excited to have him. I wanted to play together with him just the way we play in the super eagles.”

“I humble myself whenever I see Mikel. I was watching Mikel on TV when I was still in Jos, and I cannot have any problem with Mikel it is just a privilege to play with him, he said.

Onazi was instrumental to Mikel’s penning his signature for Trabzonspor as he had to help convince him to join the side. Mikel and Onazi both started out in Jos.
