Nigeria summons South African Ambassador on killings of Nigerians

The Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama, has just summoned the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

A report by ChannelsTV said the senior ministry official, Kimiebi Ebenfa, confirmed the meeting to Channels Television.

‘The meeting is expected to hold at the headquarters of the ministry of foreign affairs by 11 o’clock today’, the report by ChannelsTV said.

In a tweet posted yesterday, Onyeama said:

“Received sickening and depressing news of continued burning and looting of Nigerian shops and premises in #SouthAfrica by mindless criminals with ineffective police protection. Enough is enough. We will take definitive measures.”

Nigerians, as well as many African nationals, have been victims of gruesome killings perpetrated by South Africans. Recent reports alleged that the perpetrators of the mindless killings were given police protection.

It is not clear how the Nigerian government would respond but there are signs that a diplomatic crisis could be underway.
