Riding on the rising popularity of its bike-hailing service, ORide, OPay has just launched OBus, its bus-hailing service.
Starting with Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, OBus will be available for all its existing users on the OPay app.
The launch of a bus-hailing service would further change the equation for OPay. First is that it will become the first technology-driven bus service provider.
According to people with the knowledge of the matter, OBus vehicles will be QR code enabled that will allow OPay app users to simply tap and pay before entering the buses.
At the moment, the bus transportation channel in Lagos is very complex with various private individuals running buses under a major transportation union called the National Union of Road Transport Worker, NURTW.
OPay is an Opera Limited payment platform that now offers various tech-driven transportation services as well as financial services.
The company recently launched OTrike in Aba, a Southeast commercial city and Kano, the most commercial city in Nigeria’s Northern region. It has also launched ORide in Ibadan and Akure, two of the most commercial cities in Southwest region excluding Lagos.
Last week, Gokada, the major rival of ORide (its bike-hailing service) said it was shutting down operations for a week to restrategise its operation to achieve effectiveness.
