Former Taxify, Bolt starts bike-hailing service in Ibadan

Bolt, formerly known as Taxify has launched its motorcycle operations one of Nigeria’s largest cities, Ibadan, Oyo state.

In one of its Instagram Ads, Bolt indicated that it was recruiting for Drivers for its Boda business. Boda in East Africa connotes a type of motorcycle or bicycle with a space for a passenger or for carrying goods, often used as a taxi

Motorcycle hailing operations is fast-growing in Nigeria particularly in Lagos heralded by the likes of Maxng, Gokada. Mose recent entrant into the market, ORide (Opay), a startups of Opera Software AS. They are part of the tech giant’s $100 million strategic investment targeted for the African market.

Recalled that Oride recently expanded its operations to Ibadan in less than a month of running in Lagos. Opera Software AS’ OPay Limited in a statement earlier this week said it has raised fresh funding totaling up to $50 million to scale ORide, its bike-hailing startup in Lagos and other Nigerian cities.

Last week, Bolt also disclosed that it had raised a new round of funding to bolster its competitive pressure across Europe and emerging markets.

With Bolt delving into the motorcycle-hailing vertical, it is clear that the competition would become stiffer and interesting.
