Reserve Bank of India’s deputy governor Viral Acharya resigns

The deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Viral Acharya has just tendered his resignation.

According to IndiaToday, Viral Acharya will be returning to New York University Stern School of Business (NYU Stern) in August instead of February 2020. While RBI is yet to issue an official statement confirming the same, inside sources have confirmed that Acharya has resigned.

Local media reports said that Acharya had put down his papers just a few weeks before the last meeting of RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC).

Viral Acharya was appointed as the RBI deputy governor by the government on January 23, 2017 for a three-year term.

A local report said he had earlier raised concern over the importance of RBI’s independence in October 2018.
