Ford Motor Co said it is recalling about 1.2 million of its Explorer sport utility vehicles, SUVs.

The company said in a statement that the recall is due to a potential suspension defect that could lead to a steering problem.

The company said the affected models are 2011-2017 model year Explorers.

Ford said in the statement that the defect causes a fractured rear suspension toe link that could increase the risk of a crash.

The recall is expected to cost the company up to $180 million and it will be booked to the North American business unit by the third quarter.
