Telco lobby warns Huawei ban to hike Europe 5G cost by $62 billion

Telecommunications industry lobby group, GSMA has warned that a ban on Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd’s equipment could balloon Europe’s 5G budget by $62 billion.

GSMA said in its latest report that the additional costs reflect the total additional costs implied by a full sale ban on the Chinese telecoms giant.

“Half of this would be due to European operators being impacted by higher input costs following the significant loss of competition in the mobile equipment market,” said GSMA in a report cited by Reuters.

“Additionally, operators would need to replace existing infrastructure before implementing 5G upgrades,” said GSMA.
