Nigerian Senate confirms tenure renewal for CBN governor, Emefiele

The Nigerian Senate has just confirmed the tenure renewal for the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele.

His appointment followed his screening by the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions presented by Senator Rafiu Adebayo.

Last week, Emefiele was reappointed by President Muhammadu Buhari for another five-year term.

Emefiele was appointed into the position on June 3, 2014, by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Before his appointment to the Central Bank, Emefiele served as the Chief Executive Officer and Group Managing Director of Zenith Bank Plc since June 2014. H.E. Emefiele served as Deputy Managing Director of Zenith Bank Plc since 2001. He served as an Executive Director in charge of Corporate Banking, Treasury, Financial Control & Strategic Planning of Zenith Bank Plc and was Management team since inception.

Emefiele had over eighteen years of banking experience. Before commencing his banking career, he has lectured Finance and Insurance at the University of Nigeria Nsukka and University of Port Harcourt, respectively. He serves as the Chairman of The Board and Governor at The Central Bank of Nigeria since June 2014.

Emefiele serves as Director of Zenith Bank (Gambia) Limited. H.E Emefiele served as a Director of ACCION Microfinance Bank Limited. He served as a Director of Zenith Bank Plc until May 30, 2014 and Zenith Bank (Gambia) Limited. He serves as Member of Governing Board at The International Islamic Liquidity Management Corporation. H.E. Emefiele serves as Director of Zenith Securities Limited.

He is also an alumnus of Executive Education at Stanford University, Harvard University (2004) and Wharton Graduate Schools of Business (2005). H.E. Emefiele holds a B Sc Degree in 1984 and an MBA Degree in Finance in 1986, both from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
