Members of the Lagos State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (Lagos SWAN) have described the demise of late Jide Fashikun as “a case of one death too many”.

Lagos SWAN Chairman, Debo Oshundun said the death of one the leading lights in investigative sports journalism has really deprived the sports writers fraternity a worthy asset.

“We are sad by this untimely death which just happened within 2 weeks. The last time I saw him was in Abuja during the 2018 National Sports Festival in December.

“This should not be happening. Just on Friday, we still gathered to mark the 1 year remembrance of one of our senior colleagues, Deji Tinubu who died in 2018. Less than 48 hours, we lost another gem.

“He was full of life and we spoke on a wide range of topics centered around Nigerian sports as well as the pen pushing profession and I never knew that was the last time I was going to see him,” Oshundun continued.

The Lagos SWAN leadership described the late 54 year old Managing Editor of Gong News (Online platform) as a beacon of hope for his uprightness and ability to maintain his stand in the face of adversity.

Apart from being a journalist, the late Senior Sports reporter with ThisDay teamed up with Olympian, Mary Onyali to initiate the Nigeria Sports Development Fund to raise funds and nurture future Olympic athletes.

“We commiserate with his immediate and extended family, as well as the FCT SWAN where Fashikun was a vibrant member until his demise. May God console us all,” Oshundun concluded.
