The ruling party in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared Babajide Sanwoolu as the governorship candidate of the party for the 2019 gubernatorial election.
The APC party is the ruling party in Lagos, the country’s economic capital with over 25 million people.
At an open ballot direct primary election that was conducted across over 300 wards of the party, Babajide Sanwoolu polled a total of 970, 851 votes versus 72,901 polled by the incumbent governor, Akinwunmi Ambode.
The primary election is seen as a historic one with many firsts. A political analyst who spoke to PageOne.ng’s Political Desk said the APC Party in Lagos was the first to opt for the direct primaries and the party will also be the first to vote out and deny an incumbent a second four-year term.
There have been varied reasons why Ambode, the incumbent lost out to a new candidate from his party. Apart from his reported alienation of his party members from his government, he was also criticized for infrastructural breakdown, poor waste management system as well as deviating from the Lagos master plan.
