Nigeria’s EFCC raids Standard Chartered Bank head office

Operatives of Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have reportedly raided the Lagos headquarters of Standard Chartered Bank.

It would be recalled that Standard Chartered Bank was among the four banks fined by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, for illegally aiding MTN Nigeria, the country’s largest mobile carrier to repatriate $8.1 billion to South Africa.

Standard Chartered said in a statement that:

“We can confirm that law enforcement officials entered our head office building on 14th September 2018,” the bank said in a statement.

“We are clear there was no basis for this entry, and the law enforcement officials left the building shortly afterwards.”

The CBN has since deducted the N2.4 billion fine from Standard Chartered Bank’s account in its custody.
