Zarina Bassa resigns from Sun International

South Africa’s hotel and hospitality group, Sun International said Zarina Bassa has resigned her appointment from the company’s board of directors.

The company said in a statement that shareholders are advised that Ms Zarina Bassa has resigned as an independent non-executive director of Sun International, with immediate effect.

Zarina joined the Board of the Company as an independent non-executive director in 2010 and has during the past eight years, served as a member on the Company’s Audit, Remuneration and Investment Committees.

The Board wishes to express its appreciation to Zarina for her exemplary and dedicated service and commitment to Sun International during her tenure.

Ms. Zarina Bibi Mahomed Bassa, B.Rek, BAcc, DipAcc, CA(SA), has been a Managing Executive of Absa Private Bank at Absa Group Ltd., since February 2005. Ms. Bassa started her career at Ernst & Young in 1986, where she spent 17 years across the Durban, United Kingdom and Johannesburg offices. In 1989, she was seconded to Ernst & Young London for three years, where she worked with a number of key multinational customers. In 1992, she appointed as a Senior Manager in Ernst & Young’s accounting and auditing technical department.

In 1996, she appointed as a Partner of Ernst & Young and in 1998 as the Chief Operating Officer of Ernst & Young Africa Group. In 2002, she joined Absa as Managing Executive in Retail Banking Services. She has been Chairman of YeboYethu (RF) Limited since Jun 2008. She serves as Executive Chairman of Zarina Bassa Investments. She serves as the Chairman of Woolworths Financial Services and Yebo Yethu Limited.

She served as the Vice-Chairperson of Absa retail banking operations. She has been an Independent Non Executive Director of Woolworths Holdings Limited since November 17, 2011. She has been a Independent Non-Executive Director of Investec Limited and Investec plc since November 1, 2014. Ms. Bassa has been an Independent Non-Executive Director of Oceana Group Limited since 2011 and Sun International Ltd. since March 1, 2010. She serves as an Independent Non-Executive Director of Investec Bank Limited since November 1, 2014. She has been Non Executive Director of Investec Bank Plc since April 1, 2017.

She serves as a Non-Executive Director of BMF and the National Business Institute (NBI). She has been a Director of Senwes Limited since June 2011. She serves as a Director of Vodacom South Africa. She serves as Member of the Advisory Board to the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB ). She served as a Director of Kumba Iron Ore Limited from December 2, 2008 to May 11, 2017. She served as a Director of Lewis Group Limited from October 1, 2009 to August 15, 2014. She served as Executive Director of Absa Private Bank and Absa Retail Bank. She served on the boards of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) and the Unisa Foundation. She served as Vice-President and Chairperson of the Association for the Advancement of Black Accountants (ABASA) and as Chairperson of the Public Accountants and Auditors board and the Auditing Standards Board.

She serves as a Member of the Accounting Standards Board, the JSE’s GAAP Monitoring Panel, the board of the SA Institute of Chartered Accountants’. Ms. Bassa was named Top Women in Business and Government in 2007 and Top Business Personality in Financial Services: Banking in 2008. Ms. Bassa is qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1988.
