Makoju to become interim CEO of Dangote Cement

Dangote Cement Plc said its chief executive, Onne Van der Weijde will be stepping down for Joseph Makoju at the end of 2017.

The company said Onne Van der Weijde will leave in December for Makoju who will become the interim chief executive pending the appointment of a substantive CEO.

Mr. Onne van der Weijde has been the Group Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Cement Plc since February 2, 2015 and served as its Managing Director since March 3, 2015.

Mr. Weijde served as an Area Manager of Indian Operations at Holcim Ltd. from January 1, 2012 to April 25, 2014. He served as the Managing Director of Ambuja Cements Limited since May 1, 2010 until April 24, 2014. Mr. van der Weijde served as the Chief Financial Officer of ACC Limited since May 1, 2006.

Mr. van der Weijde served as General Manager for Holcim (India) Pvt. Ltd. since March 2005. He served as Director and Business Planning Manager in Holcim (Australia), he developed a business presence in the South East Region of Asia through Joint Ventures and Acquisitions, offering support in the management of existing operations in the Region. He serves as a Director of Bulk Cement Corporation (India) Ltd. and ACC Concrete Ltd.

He has been Director of Dangote Cement Plc since February 2, 2015. He had been the Whole-time Director of Ambuja Cements Limited since February 17, 2010 until April 2014. He served as Non Executive Director of Ambuja Cement Eastern Ltd. since May 2005. He served as a Non Executive Director of Ambuja Cements Limited from January 9, 2009 to February 2010. He served as a Director of ACC Limited from January, 2009 to October 2009.

He served as Director of Holcim Indonesia Tbk PT. Mr. Weijde holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Accounting from the University of Rotterdam in the Netherlands and an M.B.A. from the University of Bradford in the UK.

Mr. Joseph Oyeyani Makoju, OFR GCSO, serves as Special Adviser to the President/CE at Dangote Industries Limited. Mr. Makoju joined the Group as Chief Operating Officer Dangote Cement in May 2008.

His experience in the Cement and Energy Industry spans 37 years. He has been a Non Executive Director of Dangote Cement Plc since December 2, 2010. He served as Director at Lafarge Cement WAPCO Plc until February 20, 2008.

He is a member of several professional bodies and serves as the Chairman of Cement Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (CMAN). He is a recipient of the National Merit Award, Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) and Special Order of Merit ‘Commander of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Niger’.

He holds a B.Sc. and M.Phil. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nottingham.
