Dangote Cement appoints Joseph Makoju as acting MD/CEO

The Board of Directors of Dangote Cement PLC. (DCP) has appointed Eng. Joseph Makoju as the company’s Acting Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer.

In the circumstance, Mr. Onne Van der Weijde, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company will step down as the company’s CEO at the end of 2017 having completed three years in this position, in order to return to his home country, The Netherlands. He will be appointed as a Non-Executive Director of Dangote Cement PLC, with effect from 1st January 2018.

Mr. Joseph Makoju, OFR GCSO, serves as Special Adviser to the President/CE at Dangote Industries Limited. Mr. Makoju joined the Group as Chief Operating Officer Dangote Cement in May 2008. His experience in the Cement and Energy Industry spans 37 years.

He has been a Non Executive Director of Dangote Cement Plc since December 2, 2010. He served as Director at Lafarge Cement WAPCO Plc until February 20, 2008. He is a member of several professional bodies and serves as the Chairman of Cement Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (CMAN).

He is a recipient of the National Merit Award, Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) and Special Order of Merit ‘Commander of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Niger’. He holds a B.Sc. and M.Phil. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nottingham.
