Prudential has appointed Mr. Thomas Watjen as a non-executive director.
The group said Mr Watjen joined the Board and became a member of the Remuneration Committee with effect from 11 July 2017.
Mr Watjen has extensive leadership experience in US and international life insurance. He spent over 20 years at US-based life insurer Unum Group and its predecessor Provident Companies Inc., serving as President and Chief Executive Officer for 12 years and as Non-Executive Chairman. Mr Watjen is currently non-executive director of SunTrust Banks, Inc.

Mr. Thomas R. Watjen, also known as Tom, served as the Chief Executive Officer at Unum Group since March 31, 2003 until May 2015. Mr. Watjen serves as the Chief Financial Officer of Provident Life Capital Corporation. He serves as President of Provident Life & Accident Insurance Co.
He served as the President of Unum Group from March 31, 2003 to April 1, 2015. He served as the Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of Unum Group from May 15, 2002 to March 2003. He served as Executive Vice President, Finance of Unumprovident Corp. since June 30, 1999 and assumed additional Risk Management responsibilities on November 1, 1999. He served as the Chief Financial Officer of Provident since March 26, 1997.
He served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of a Provident predecessor company since July 1994. Mr. Watjen served as a Managing Director of the insurance practice of the investment banking firm, Morgan Stanley & Co., which he joined in 1987. He was a partner with Conning & Co. and in the corporate finance areas of Aetna Life and Casualty. He served as Chairman and Director of Unum Limited. He served as Non Executive Chairman of Unum Group since May 2015 until May 25, 2017. He served as Vice Chairman of Provident since March 26, 1997. He served as a Non-Executive Director of Unum Group since 2002 until May 25, 2017.
He has been a Director of SunTrust Banks, Inc. since April 2010. He served as a Director of American Council of Life Insurers. He joined The Financial Services Roundtable and served as a Director for America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) since 2004. He served as a Director of Unumprovident Finance Company Plc. In 2005.
He has been member of the VMI Foundation since 2003. Mr. Watjen attended the Virginia Military Institute where he earned a bachelor’s in economics in 1976. He holds a Master’s In Business Administration from the Darden School at the University of Virginia in 1981.
