Brazilian court sentence former President, Lula Da Silva to 9 years in jail

Former President of Brazil, Luis Inacio Lula Da Silva has just beings sentenced to nine years in prison after he was found guilty of corruption.

Lula Da Silva who is one of Brazil’s most influential politician was given nine and a half years in prison after the court found him guilty of accepting 3.7 million reais ($1.2 million) worth of bribes from engineering firm OAS SA, the amount prosecutors said the company spent refurbishing a beach apartment for Lula in return for his help winning contracts with state oil company Petroleo Brasileiro.

Lula Da Silva’s lawyer said they will appeal the judgement. He had in the past referred to the matter as a political witch hunt. Michel Temer, the current president who upstaged his predecessor, Dilma Rousseff is also accused of

Lula Da Silva was the godfather of Dilma Rousseff, a former political activist who took the reigns of government from him. During his two terms in goverment, Lula Da Silva had record high approval rating as a result of his efforts in pulling millions of Brazilians out of poverty.
