David Hampshire began his career in Scotland before moving to Zambia to work for the National Import and Export Corporation in Lusaka.
After three years he moved to the Copperbelt as Managing Director of Speciality Foods, a food manufacturing company, part of JL Morison Son and Jones which was acquired by Guinness in 1978. In 1981 David became Managing Director of Guinness Cameroun.
He moved back to London to become Managing Director of Guinness Africa in 1988 and then Diageo Africa in 2000. He oversaw major investments by Guinness and Diageo in Africa and expansion of the group’s interests on the continent, making Africa a key part of Diageo’s global operations.
David has a BA in history from the University of East Anglia, an MBA from the University of Strathclyde and City and Guilds in textiles from Leicester College of Technology.
David retired from Diageo in 2005 and has been involved with Africa Practice as a Special Adviser, a Board Director and most recently as Chairman. David is an also an adviser to The Business Council for Africa; he has chaired the Africa regional advisory board at The London Business School and is Chairman of Dashen Brewery in Ethiopia.
