How the stock market performed this week

A total turnover of 1.073 billion shares worth NGN8.60 billion in 14,486 deals were traded this week by investors on the floor of the Stock Exchange in contrast to a total of 1.052 billion shares valued at NGN8.03 billion that exchanged hands last week in 13,586 deals.

The Financial Services Industry (measured by volume) led the activity chart with 930.380 million shares valued at NGN5.70 billion traded in 8,759 deals; thus contributing 86.70% and 66.24% to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively. The Consumer Goods Industry followed with 52.480 million shares worth NGN1.99 billion in 2,513 deals. The third place was occupied by Conglomerates Industry with a turnover of 22.125 million shares worth NGN39.21 million in 499 deals.

Trading in the Top Three Equities namely – Staco Insurance Plc, Zenith International Bank Plc and Guaranty Trust Bank Plc (measured by volume) accounted for 473.880 million shares worth NGN4.26 billion in 2,254 deals, contributing 44.16% and 49.60% to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.

Also traded during the week was a total of 15.400 million units of Exchange Traded Products (ETPs) valued at NGN198.477 million executed in 9 deals, compared with a total of 200 units valued at NGN338,007.70 transacted last week in 8 deals. (See summary in the table below):

A total of 10,673 units of Federal Government Bonds valued at NGN10.47 million were traded this week in 10 deals, compared with a total of 1,135 units valued at NGN1.17 million transacted last week in 5 deal.

The NSE All-Share Index and Market Capitalization depreciated by 0.69% to close the week at 25,164.91 and NGN8.709 trillion. Similarly, all other Indices finished lower during the week with the exception of the NSE Premium, NSE Oil/Gas, NSE Lotus II and the NSE Industrial Goods indices that appreciated by 0.70%, 1.63%, 0.44% and 0.73% respectively, while the stock exchange ASem Index closed flat.

29 equities appreciated in price during the week, higher than 19 equities of the previous week. 25 equities depreciated in price, lower than 38 equities of the previous week, while 123 equities remained unchanged higher than 119 equities recorded in the preceding week.
