Obaseki budget

Godwin Obaseki, a seasoned investment banker who was one of the main brains at Afrinvest Limited has just been declared as the winner of the governorship election in Edo state.

Obaseki, a candidate of the APC party, won the election with a total of 319,493 votes to beat Ize Iyamu Osagie of the PDP party who scored a total of 253,173. As a keenly contested election with a very high stake, Obaseki will be leading a state that is heavily divided.

Mr. Godwin Obaseki serves as Managing Director and Director of Afrinvest (West Africa) Limited and served as its Chairman of the Board until June 2016. In 1995, Mr. Obaseki founded SecTrust, the predecessor company to Afrinvest, pioneering major innovations and providing leadership in the Nigerian stock market.

Obaseki has served on the Presidential Committee on the Reform of the Nigerian Pension System. He also served on the Committee on the Re-activation of the Nigerian Bond Market set up by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

He is an active member of The NSE and currently serves on its Governing Council. He has also served on many of the committees of The Exchange. In 2001, Mr. Obaseki was nominated Global Leader of Tomorrow (GLT) by the World Economic Forum. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers and an alumnus of the Lagos Business School Chief Executive Program.

He will be taking over from Adams Oshiomole, a former labour union president who has been in power for the past eight years. Edo state is one of the major states in the South South region of Nigeria with major agro-allied products and oil deposits.

Edo state’s budget for the year 2016 is estimated at NGN111.5 billion. The crash in federal government revenue due to the fall in crude oil price would further strain Edo state’s financial prospects.

Obaseki will have to bring his financial knowledge to ensure Edo state deliver dividends of democracy to the people.
