DSTV Has 10.4 Million Subscribers In Africa, 1.5 Million In Nigeria

Million subscribers

DSTV Nigeria only has about 1.5 million subscribers even as it conceded to a PwC report that Nigeria’s payTV household is expected to reach 3.2 million by 2019.

The data was revealed a special meeting organised by DSTV, Africa’s largest payTV company gathered managing directors of media and advertising agencies to share its.

In its notes to invited agency chiefs, DSTV said its total subscriber base in Africa is about 10,4 million across 50 African states. The company did not provide breakdown by countries.

Buttressing its projections for the market, the DSTV said “While the Nigerian TV market is a robust one, it is also a growing market with a number of key players who operate in the payTV space. This is not only great for competition but it also provides real choice for the end consumer. The PwC Entertainment and Media Outlook, 2015-2019, reports that the number of payTV households in Nigeria is expected to reach 3.2 million in 2019, compared to 1 million in 2010. The digital TV sub-Saharan Africa 2016 Forecast state that the total Nigeria TV homes will grow to an estimated 17.3 million homes in the next 5 years which will be about half of the projected population in 2021”.

It should be noted that DSTV’s data on the total TV household in Nigeria is at variance with the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, the government agency that regulates and issue broadcast license in Nigeria. In September 2015, the NBC had told journalists that there are about 37,3 million households in the country have access to television. The NBC also claimed that there are about 4 million payTV (digital TV) subscribers in the country.

Starting operations in 1994 in Nigeria, DSTV has since then floated GoTV for the mass market. DSTV is in major competition with StarTimes, a Chinese TV company that formed partnership with the Nigerian National Television Authority.

DSTV is owned by Naspers, an Internet and media group with key equity investment in eCommerce, payments and data analytics.
