Governor Emmanuel Udom And His Wasteful Gift On The Super Eagles

Emmanuel Udom

Still wondering why Akwa Ibom State governor Mr Emmanuel Udom rewarded the Super Eagles with N10 million after their victory over the Taifa Stars of Tanzania in a dead-rubber AFCON 2017 qualifier match.

The Eagles were wasteful with their chances hence could only manage a 1-0 win over the visitors in the match played inside the Nest of of Champions Stadium courtesy of Manchester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho.

Beating Tanzania was inconsequential to their campaign as they finished with 5 points and behind Egypt who topped the log with 10 points. It is fine to reward excellence and outstanding performance not when the team performs below. What do we make of this 10 million reward, Is it a question of a delighted king who decides to make free donations?

It seems managing rewards received by sportsmen has suddenly become an issue that calls for urgent attention which must not be swept under the carpet. It could be recalled that the NFF also tried to intercept the cash reward to the Dream Team from a Japanese billionaire Katsuya Takasu during their Olympic campaign.

PageOne gathered that the money was converted into payment for camp allowances by the Nigeria Football Federation who had earlier promised to only refund flight tickets of invited overseas-based players. The federation is yet to confirm this at the time of filing this report.

Although the NFF is yet to confirm officially how the money received from Governor Emmanuel was spent, but should these allegations be true it will once again portray the federation in bad light.

When state governors make donations,it should be clearly spelt out where the donation was coming from and for what purpose just as declared by Dr Surgeon Takasu, There were also indications that the governor extended his gift to the visitors (Tanzania received $10,000). May be the governor can also donate to the National purse since it’s so blessed.

Sometime in April this year, Sahara reporters uncovered Governor Emmanuel Udom’s recently completed massive  building in his hometown of Awa community in Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, just four months into offices.
