Well, if losing the Germany 2-0 in the men’s football event in Semi final has ended the country’s dream of winning a gold medal in Rio, this will sure come as relief as Nigeria has been awarded an Olympic silver medal courtesy the International Olympic Committee from the Beijing 2008 Games.
The IOC announced yesterday that Russia was stripped of a relay gold medal from the 2008 Beijing Olympics on Tuesday, after one of its female runners tested positive for steroids in a reanalysis of her doping samples.
As part of this process, Russia’s gold medal for the women’s 4x100m relay, in which Yulia Chermoshanskaya participated, is withdrawn, the IOC added.
“The Athlete, Yulia Chermoshanskaya is found to have committed an anti-doping rule violation pursuant to the IOC Anti-Doping Rules applicable to the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing in 2008,” the statement published later on Tuesday.
Sprinter Yulia Chermoshanskaya tested positive for two drugs — stanozolol and turinabol — and has been retroactively disqualified and, along with her team-mates, stripped of the gold medal in the women’s 4×100-meter relay long with her teammates.
Nigeria moved up to Silver behind behind climbing the Gold while Brazil moved to bronze.
The IOC asked the IAAF to modify the results and consider any further sanctions against Chermosh-anskaya, who is no longer competing.
