The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, FAAN is statutorily charged to manage all Commercial Airports in Nigeria and provide service to both passenger and airlines is now enmeshed in a web of financial scandals.
Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC have arrested an employee FAAN over financial misappropriation amounting to NGN70 million.
The nature of the fraud are series of payroll frauds. EFCC news release said the FAAN’s payroll system was used to mismanage and divert ‘furniture allowance’ of staff for more than two years.
Yakubu Datti, the spokesperson for the agency said FAAN “would further modernize its accounting system, explore new ways to boost revenues, and also continuously monitor activities of its personnel involved in revenue generation and accounting”.
This is yet another reason the privatisation of Nigerian airports are inevitable, Hadi Sirika, Minister of State for Aviation has already put in motion a bidding process for all Nigerian airports under the control of FAAN.
In early May, Hadi had slammed all the managers at FAAN offices citing various cases of mismanagement, poor maintenance of airport facilities and incompetence. The ball is now in he court to forge ahead with the privatisation of FAAN, Nigerians deserve world-class airports that are yielding revenue for the government through the collection of appropriate taxes.
