Flood Alerts For Lagos And 10 States

Residents and business communities in Lagos and 10 states across southern and northern Nigeria have to brace up for the likelihood of flood predicted by NIHSA

Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency warned that due to ocean the rise in sea level and tide, “expected areas of river flooding this year are located in the following river basins, Niger, Benue, Sokoto-Rima, Anambra-Imo, Cross River, Niger Delta, Komadougu-Yobe, Ogun-Osun and several other sub-basins of the country.

“The expected inflows in the country for this year will be lower than that of 2012. Meanwhile, the predicted probable flood area coverage in 2016 is expected to be higher than the predicted probable flood as well as the observed value of 2015.” he said

“Some coastal areas such as Lagos, Port Harcourt, Calabar, etc, are expected to experience flooding due to rise in sea level and tidal surge, while flash and urban flooding are likely to occur in Sokoto, Ibadan, Kaduna, Yola, Maiduguri, Makurdi, Hadejia and settlements or cities along the Nigeria coastal line” he said.

The last time Lagos witnessed a severe flood that destroyed property worth billions of Naira (NGN) was in mid 2012. Lekki, a middle class section of Lagos is prone to periodic and perennial flash floods during rainy seasons.

Residents within this axis of Lagos are expected to be mostly impacted should this forecast play out.
