The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND said it has started negotiations with Nigeria’s federal government.
Confirming the development, Jomo Gbomo, spokesperson for MEND said the group “will seek to find solutions to the short, medium and long-term future of the Niger Delta region”.
Nigeria’s Niger-Delta region has come under severe attacks from militants in the region. Niger Delta Avengers, a possible splinter group from MEND has been at the forefront of the various attacks that has crippled Nigeria’s oil production.
It is still unclear whether MEND will co-opt Avengers into the talks.
