This Is Why Russia Might Be Banned By The IOC

Russia

As the world awaits the International Olympics Committee, IOC decision on whether to ban Russia’s entire track and field athletes over allegations of state-sponsored doping, many might not know why Russia is been put on the spot.

Russia has overtime been accused of condoning doping amongst its athletics and sports community, but many did not realise that Russia as a state might be directly in charge of an institutionalised doping programme.

To ensure all allegations are investigated, the World Anti-doping Agency, WADA inaugurated the Maclaren Committee to look into allegations of doping allegations at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics hosted by Russia.

The committee was headed by Professor McLaren and was asked to establish the facts related to the following:

  1. Whether there had been manipulation of the doping control process during the 2014 Sochi Olympic and Paralympic Games, including but not limited to, acts of tampering with the samples within the WADA-accredited satellite laboratory in Sochi (Sochi laboratory) that was established for the Games.
  2. To identify the ‘modus operandi’ and those involved in such manipulation.
  3. To identify any athlete that might have benefited from such manipulation to conceal positive doping tests.
  4. To identify if potentially this ‘modus operandi’ was also happening within the Moscow laboratory outside the period of the 2014 Sochi Games.
  5. Whether there was any other evidence or information held by Dr. Rodchenkov.

The Maclaren Committee said ‘beyond reasonable doubt’:

  1. The Moscow laboratory operated, for the protection of doped Russian athletes, within a State-dictated failsafe system, described in the Report as the Disappearing Positive Methodology.
  2. The Sochi laboratory operated a unique sample swapping methodology to enable doped Russian athletes to compete at the Games.
  3. The Ministry of Sport directed, controlled and oversaw the manipulation of athletes’ analytical results and sample swapping, with the active participation and assistance of the Federal Security Service (FSB); the Center of Sports Preparation of National Teams of Russia (CSP); and, both Moscow and Sochi laboratories.

With this conclusion, Russia has finally been exposed as a cheat. While many other states might also be guilty until an investigation is conducted, Russia might end up as the scape-goat for state-sponsored doping as other parties might clean their tracks.

In the next couple of hours, Russia might be banned from participating at the Rio 2016 Olympics, or receive a partial ban, the truth remains that doping is destroying sports and more importantly, those innocent sports men and women who are robbed by drug cheats, that can never be avenged by bans and fines.
