The Nigerian telecom market has just received another game-changer- Rebtel
Rebtel a mobile communications start-up has launched its international calling app into the Nigerian market and 11 other countries such as Kenya, Ghana, Liberia, Ethiopia, Senegal, Cameroon, Cote D’Ivoire, Eritrea, Mali, Togolese Republic and Zimbabwe.
Rebtel is an innovative Swedish-based mobile communications company that allows users to make unlimited and affordable international calls to any mobile device or landline via its app, without the assistance of WiFi. The company is out to disrupt the mobile telecom market by hijacking real phone lines to liberate international calling.
In a statement made available to PageOne, Rebtel said it is proud to announce its innovative campaign called ‘Speak freely’. Basketmouth, Nigeria’s foremost comedian is the face of the campaign. As part of its strategy to comb the market, Rebtel is offering one free week of calling to Africa to new users that download the app.
Acting as the creative-force behind the campaign, the video highlights both Rebtel’s and Basketsmouth’s roles as enablers of speaking freely. The first film premieres are freely available at both basketmouth.tv and Rebtel.com.
To elaborate on his passion for the campaign, Basketmouth said “One thing that makes the skits awesome is not just the scripts, cast, crew, and director and the Rebtel team. It’s the commitment, the hard work and the aim of the films. I’ve never worked with such an amazing team and I believe the skits will probably be the best I’ve ever done. It’s hard to choose which is my favourite as they’re all flawless”
Commenting on the campaign, Fredrik Wrahme, CMO Rebtel said,“This campaign is created with the spirit of breaking the stereotypical low quality content often made for African audiences and instead give the microphone to a true creative spokesperson for the community.”
Rebtel approach is to make voice calls affordable to Nigerians and Africans, for them to connect with friends, families and business associates. It will be interesting to see how the company will compete with local mobile carriers who are all keen at making a claim to the cheapest international calling market.
The company was founded in 2006 by Hjalmar Winbladh and Jonas Lindroth. Led by the former executives of Tele2, Rebtel is turning the telco industry on its head with a global app that liberates international calling and removes the fees associated with calling abroad.
