N2.9bn Olympic Fund: Nigerians Demand Accountability, More Funds For Olympic Team

The National Association of Nigerian Students NANS, has expressed concerns over the issue of lack of funds for preparation towards the Olympic games.

As the nation’s athletes prepare for the global event, there are reports of misappropriation of N2.9 billion released by the Muhammadu Buhari’s government, hence NANS calls for a probe into the defunct National Sports Commission.

It could also be recalled that the present Sports Minister Solomon Dalung claimed that the Director General of NSC Al-hassan Yakmut was yet to present a brief on the spending, an allegation Yakmut denied.

The fund released in 2015 was earmarked for the All African Games, Youth Olympics and the 2016 Rio Olympics.

”Lack of fund should not continue to be the excuse of sports men and women in our great country Nigeria which is also the giant of Africa. Nevertheless we urge the government to track every amount they want to approve for the training of our athletes to ensure that they get what is their due”, – the Student body said in a statement signed by the National Director, Sports, NANS, Comrade Godwin Erheriene. Yes, the government must enquire as to how the money was spent and why the athletes are crying for funds to prepare for an event that is just a few months away. Sweeping or trivializing this allegations would mean that the nation is set for a disappointing outing in Brazil come August.

The present government in its recent activities has shown that it is zero tolerance for corruption, please here comes another issued that must be addressed.
