Brazzaville Under Attack, Could There Be A Coup?

Barrage of bullets torn through the streets of Brazzaville, the capital of Congo Republic in the early hours of Monday. The shootings may not be unconnected to the opposition of  President Denis Sassou Nguesso according to witness.

“Young opposition supporters chanted “Sassou, leave!”, erected barricades near the main roundabout in southern Brazzaville’s Makelekele neighbourhood and set fire to the local mayor’s office and police headquarters,” the account read.

But a government statement did not yet have proof that opposition supporters were involved in the gunfire.

President Nguesso got re-elected in a controversial poll last month.  Opposition supporters say they are frustrated in the wake of the March 20 election that one of Africa’s longest-serving rulers can extend a tenure that has already totalled 32 years.
