Breaking: Buhari to Nominate Barkindo as OPEC’s Secretary General

Barkindo was the former managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC. He left NNPC in 2010. He had represented Nigeria at OPEC in 2006.

OPEC has been engulfed in a supremacy battle owing to the rivalries between Arabian countries of Iran, Saudi Arabia and Iraq. These countries have not agreed on candidates proposed by opposing sides.

Nigeria is a key member of OPEC and the sixth largest net exporter of crude oil. Its membership of OPEC is key to its economic survival, as Nigeria has in recent times rallied OPEC members, to curtail their crude oil exports in order to forestall the continuous decline of the commodity in the global crude oil price.
