Manslaughter: Nollywood Fiberesima Faces Jail Term

The Actors Guild of Nigeria President and Nollywood actress, Ibinabo Fiberesima may be jailed for 5 years if the Lagos State High court judgement is not overturned. She was sentenced for manslaughter having knocked down late Dr. Suraj Giwa, a staff in one of Lagos State’s hospitals, in 2006.

Fiberesima who is also Nigerian ex-beauty queen paid NGN 100k in fine to a Lagos Magistrate Court, before which the case was ruled by several lower courts as manslaughter. However, she was recently sentenced to a 5 year jail term for dangerous and reckless driving.

The actress looked upbeat and resplendent in her outfit during the last Africa Movie Viewer’s Choice Awards, AMVCA before the judgement.

Biola Giwa-Adeyemi, sister of the late Dr. Giwa, in a recent press chat revealed that the case is not with her family and the actress, but between Lagos State versus Fiberesima. She explained that the family of the deceased has moved on a long time ago.

Nigeria’s blogosphere and social media space is awash with pleas and supplications for leniency in the actress’s case.

Whether this is going to make significant impact on a fresh appeal as her previous appeal was dismissed by Justice Deborah of the Lagos High Court is yet to be seen.
