Nigerian Military To Take War On Terror To The Cyberspace

After a relative victory over the Boko Haram terrorist group, the Nigerian war on terror will be switching to the cyberspace.

In a stern statement by Tukur Buratai, Nigeria’s Chief Army Staff, said the military will be forming a cyber army that will match and overtake Boko Haram. He hinted that a military-weakened Boko Haram has moved into the cyberspace to spread propaganda against the military, carry out online recruitment and creation of digital tools to engage the youth population to spread its ideology.

However, Buratai himself was accused of owning choice property in Dubai. While he has confirmed the allegations, he provided proofs that he purchased the property through profits from his personal business. He alleged that elements of Boko Haram are using such pretext to cause confusion and disaffection in the military through the use of propaganda and orchestrated lies.

“…we have already defeated the terrorists on the land, and they have migrated to the cyberspace and internet, but I want to assure the Boko Harams (sic) that have migrated to the cyberspace, that we would follow them to the cyberspace and defeat them.” he said

Last week, there were rumours on the social media that there are signs of a military coup d’etat against the Nigerian government.

Whichever way the matter is viewed, it is quite unsettling that the Nigerian military is confirming that it does not have a well-equipped cyber army. While it is better late than never, such statement sends the wrong signal to a low-tech terrorist group such as Boko Haram.

Early last year, Boko Haram pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in Syria and the Levant, ISIL. The terror group was however discovered not to have any material or financial link was only seeking attention and ideological correctness with ISIL.
